Recipe of Life
for solo vibraphone
The Recipe of Life for solo vibraphone was inspired by a poem from the sun and her flowers, a collection of poetry from Rupi Kaur.
this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom
-rupi kaur
Numerous implements are utilized throughout the five movements of the piece. Each notehead shape has a corresponding implement. Pay special attention to the noteheads throughout the piece as the implement choices are not marked with text. The notation key is displayed below.
Movement 2 requires the use of two towels folded lengthwise and placed on top of the vibraphone. Use two hand towels measuring about 25” by 16” each. Notes written within the movement will direct the placement of the towels.
Movements 3 and 4 require holding 4 implements plus a bow. With either Stevens or Burton grip, hold four mallets as normal. Then place the bow in the right hand between the middle finger and thumb, pressed against the left side of the inner mallet. Some maneuverability is lost, but what remains is adequate to perform the required passages.
Pedaling is generally left up to the performer. Most lines can ring freely until the harmony changes. Some of the faster passages in movements 4 and 5 can be played with less resonance.
