Borrowed Time Remembered
for percussion trio
The four chords that open Borrowed Time Remembered come from the opening four chords of Bill Evan's standard, Time Remembered. I use these four chords repeatedly throughout the work while shifting the voicing and the accompaniment to create a number of contrasting sections.
One feature of each percussionist's set-up in Borrowed Time Remembered is a large guiro. These guiros were built specifically for this piece, but any long, scrape-able object may be substituted. Many good substitutes can be found in recordings of David Lang's Scraping Song.
The middle portion of the work features a shifting-meter vibraphone solo that is accompanied by a consistent half-note woodblock pulse. This pulse shifts through the odd time signatures to create a polyrhythmic feel.
